@.tif - sorry I didn't reply sooner, but I have been inundated with spam, and you're comment got lost in it all.

Oh see that would really annoy me, if someone told me "I couldn't". Why can't you make a living working from home and online? People are doing it everyday, and it's becoming more and more popular. People a sick of all the politics and crap that goes on with a 9-5 (I mean I really should say 10). There's certainly a revolution happening in what people want in life. Never say never, just start taking action and don't let negative comments get in your way. I'm pretty lucky I haven't had that, but I think I give-off that vibe, that if you tell me "no" I will say "yes". I'm pretty stubborn that way. And will try and prove someone wrong - he he! I knew that stubborn streak of mine was good for something ;)

Just keep doing what you're doing...you will get there.

Thanks for this post. I'd have to say that people like the folks @scoutiegirl have really saved my sanity lately. It's good to know I'm not alone in my day dreaming. Currently, I'm "stuck" in an agency job, which I don't hate at all—great people, great benefits, great clients. However I also long to be working from home, for myself, with my family (I have a 5 month old son; our first baby). My husband is still finishing school and is able to stay at home as caregiver, but in my heart, I know where I'd rather be.

I know that it's possible to do, despite the fact that even my agency would have me believe there's no future in it. :(

I think that's the most discouraging thing—knowing it's all possible but being told I shouldn't do it. I love to do more than design: I sew, I screen print, etc. and I know all of that is hard to categorize into one lump. I think you've got a great thought going, semantically speaking, especially for the future as our economy looks to recover and people start waking up again to the awesomeness that is handmade/indie society.

I too got motivated by the scoutie girl post (like many of her posts) and I love your input. It really is another branch that I am in as well. I come from a fine art education with a graphic design work history. I now create mixed media prints and am working on a design line that could be applied to bags fabric cards etc. So who the heck does that make me. I think getting to caught up in defining just deters me from getting on with the work. There are so many of us sort of making it up as we go along, and I think new terminology will develop as we grow. Hey why not just start using "entre-designer" and see if it catches on? I look forward to seeing where this all goes. I plan to jump on board at Creative Empire next month so I guess I'll see you there. Thanks for the comment a my place! BTW I love what you are doing and will do my part to give the shout out.

@ Colleen - Good point about the term indie, because I am relatively new to the handmade movement. I didn't quite understand the difference between the word "Indie" and "Handmade". I think Indie is a better word, but even then it's probably not clear to those on the "outside". I think there should be a new named developed, like "entre-designers" - he he! So we can clearly define who we are and not step on anyones toes.

I am trying to develop a site similar to what you are talking about - http://ammiki.com is the start of that. But I have issues with it, mainly because I am not the best person at "Getting a message out" and how do I explain that we're creative without being handmade. It's hard one to figure out. That's why I would like a new defined terminology for our niche.

I feel really fired up about the subject after read the scoutie girl blog I think a lot has been said well in both your posts. I really relate to a lot of the points you make and will been spending so time thinking about the term entrepenur and if that fits what I'm doing... I came into this debate calling myself an indie designer and I still think this is the term that best sums up what my work is about.

I do not 'handmade' but somehow indie design has got caught up in the 'craft, handmade' movement. I personally wish there was an indie design version of etsy all about the craft of ideas rather than the craft of handmaking. I would also quickly like to add that sometimes the ethics of a designer who out source can be stronger than a handmakers (not all) that buys fabric or beads from unresearched sellers.

@shilo - Some wise words there Shilo :) Yep I think I am definitely heavier on the entrepreneurial side. I get a kick out of hearing stories, or just coming up with ideas (even if they don't eventuate to anything).

I too if I am honest am social and I think that's why I need to work with other people. I was hoarding my creative ideas to myself, but that's now something I realise I don't enjoy. I need to bounce off ideas with others, rather than myself...but you're right finding those people you can work with is the hard part. I am not sure how on earth I am going to tackle that. But I do know I have to figure out exactly where my strengths lies and what weaknesses need to be filled by another.

Off to look at that blog link. Thanks Shilo :)

Honestly, I feel that while there is room for people who are both creative and entrepreneurial, for most, it's best to not dilute your focus, which should be on whatever you're stronger with/enjoy more.

Like you, I'm a bit of both, but I'm def heavier on the creative side. I've found the best projects I've worked on have been in alliance with another person who is also a bit of both, but with them being heavier on the beeswax side. I'll listen to their creative input and combine it with my ideas for an all-around better output and the same thing with the biz side. Each person takes the lead in one aspect, but focuses the majority of their attention/skill on the area they're strongest at.
Obviously, the hard part with this preferred strategy of mine is finding someone the right fit to work with, but it's all a trial and error process like anything else.

I've done some projects totally solo, and while it works great for others, I've found that it's not for me. I'm too social and love feeding off/supplying energy and ideas with other people. Additionally, doing everything yourself is a MONUMENTAL amount of work.
